Assistive technology (AT) has done wonders for users with disabilities in living an independent life. Assistive technology has made it possible for users with disabilities to succeed in every aspect of day-to-day life, which has resulted in the overall growth of the society. Today computers are used extensively and assistive technology is available to enable users with different types of disabilities work independently on the computer as well.
Few people are aware that people with disabilities can work with computers. There are numerous tools and technologies available to aid people with disabilities in using computers. For example, there are specialized tools available that will help people having limited movement of arms use computers without any trouble. Such aids are referred as Assistive Technologies.
Today many of the operating systems have built-in functionalities which people with disabilities can use to meet their requirements. In addition, there is third party software that people with disabilities can purchase.
Technically, Assistive Technology is a term given to the application which is used to give support or assist someone. It is also known as "Adaptive Technology".
International Standards Organization (ISO) defines assistive technology as "Hardware or Software products used by people with disabilities to accomplish their tasks".
Today with the help of assistive technologies, people with disabilities can participate in online activities, such as education, shopping, banking, listening to music and playing games. Assistive technologies have also made it possible for people with disabilities to actively contribute to the work force by opening up employment opportunities in different industries.
