Techshare India 2008 – Great Experience

Filed under: Techshare India — Shilpi Kapoor @ 6:53 pm

Hi Everyone,

It was an outstanding experience being a part of Techshare India 2008. I was given an opportunity to anchor Track 2 – Making a Difference. This track included presentations on different technologies which would help people with disabilities to make a difference in their lives.

Different speakers included, Mr Dipendra Manocha, Ms. Shanti Raghavan, Mr. Steve Bennett, Ms. Priya James, Mr. Ram Agarwal, Mr. Om Deskmukh. According to me, one of the best presentations was ‘Use of technology in education training and development of the disabled’ which was presented by Ms. Shanti Raghavan. She used some very good examples to explain the topic.

Dr. Analpa Paranjpe of Morris Trust gave an insightful presentation on Indian Child Intelligence Test (ICIT). This test is used as diagnostic tool for people with learning disabilities. Another presentation on different Assistive Technologies by Ram Agarwal was also very interesting. The different products showcased were amazing.

Presentation on ‘Dolphin Easy Converter’ by Steve Bennett was also one of the good presentations. The Question and Answer session at the end of every presentation was very interesting and the audience response was beyond expectations.

It was really nice to see many people with different disabilities had come to attend the presentations. Volunteers were trying to help them in every possible way. We also had sign language interpreters for hearing impaired people for every presentation.

Though, some presentations started late, while some went beyond the specified time limit, but the enthusiasm of the audience was clearly visible and they enjoyed every presentation.

Being a part of Techshare India 2008!!!

Filed under: Techshare India — Shilpi Kapoor @ 6:41 pm

I (Rachana Parikh) would like to grab this opportunity to share my experience of being a part of Techshare India 2008. The task allotted to me on the very first day was to escort the chief guests to the green room for the keynote session. After some time, I realized that the session has already been started and I was at the registration desk helping out my colleagues. After which everything was going as smooth as we had thought of.

One of my focal tasks was to handle the Track 1 – The road ahead – Envisioning the accessibility road map for both the days. There were around 11 presenters and 1 panel discussions consisting of seven people with different titles of presentation. All of these had only one goal to achieve that is to development of universal design which should be accessible by all.

As an anchor, announcing front of the crowd was little breath taking but I have tried to give my best. I had to inform the presenters, about the allotted time in which they have to finish their presentation. Some of them had really taken it positively and tried to achieve this deadline but some took it negatively and I can still remember the look on their faces :-) . Without any training talking to the hearing impaired volunteer to help the visually impaired was one of the most interesting experience which I managed to act some how.

The presentation by Sachin Verma, Practical exercise – troubleshooting accessibility, he made people blind fold their eyes and experience the difficulties faced by visually impaired people by making them feel difference between 500 and 100 rupee notes and 1 and new 2 rupee coins. He also made some people from the audience sit on a wheelchair to make them aware of mobility impairment.

The presentation by Shanti Raghvan was very insightful as her presentation was on talking about Workplace solutions for employment of disabled. In today’s world, employment for people like us is not easy, so we can imagine how insecure the differently enabled people must be feeling. Her presentation was full of case studies which she must have come across where people with disability are working in corporates on a good designation.

Presentations by Sam Taraporewala, Omprakash Subbarao were very practical and attention-grabbing. In the last presentation of Sriram Bharatam, he thanked the organizers, volunteers, and of course Shilpi Kapoor for the remarkable achievement.

As a whole, it was an exceptional experience for which I can go on and on and on…

Regards,
Rachana

My experience at Techshare India 2008

Filed under: Techshare India — Webmaster @ 6:23 pm

Hi all,

Techshare India was completely a new experience for me. Its been few months that I am into Web accessibility and Techshare helped me understand accessibility from user perspective. I have learned that accessibility is not about technology its about people.

Right from developing the Techshare Registration form with the help of our tester Priti to handling the tracks in the conference; everything has widened my perspective about accessibility.

First day of Techshare was full of excitement and tension. I was at the registration desk and this was my first brush up with such a huge crowd. The day then progressed with all kinds of experiences.I was touched by the gestures of one disability coming forward to help other disability.

I was given the responsibility of handling Track 4 on 2nd day of Techshare India.
The track included combination of papers from track 2 and 3. The track started with ‘Bookshare.org: The online library built by people with disabilities’ by Lisa Friendly. Bookshare.org is an online library service for print-disabled people. Lisa Friendly explained how one can become member and download the books. She also added what are the facilities available for International readers.

The track included various other presentation which were useful for visually impaired. These included ‘Banking Access for Visually Challenged – The Biometric Option’ by Prashant Naik along with Dr. Sam Taraporevala who was very helpful in solving queries related to banking problems faced by visually challenged and provided a secure alternative which can be used by banks for accessible banking processess.

The most happening presentation in the track was ‘Access to Information, Makes all the difference’ by George Abraham. He highlighted his project called Eyeway – a gateway to an information highway on the eye and blindness. One thing which I would like to mention is that this presentation was full of enthusiasm and believe me it took me 5-10 mins to realize that he is visually impaired.

Techshare India 2008 had made me realize how a little effort in all kinds of work areas can make life easier for all kinds of disability.

Cheers

Techshare India 2008 – an amazing experience

Filed under: Assistive Technologies, Print Disability, Techshare India, Uncategorized — Shilpi Kapoor @ 5:36 pm

Hello all,

Techshare India 2008 was a great learning experience for me. It was pleasure seeing such a huge number of delegates from across the world.

I was really touched when visitors at the exhibition were so enthusiastic to see the different products. Especially everyone would shown interest in all products even that is not meant for them. For instance, the powered wheel chair displayed at one of the stalls, I guess, almost everyone tried including me:) I got a feeling that I am driving a vehicle:)

I felt very pleased when people coming and visiting our stall to see the exciting accessible games developed in Flash. I heard lots of people with disabilities saying, it is the first time they get to play a cross word which is a popular game.

One of the most amazing experiences I had during Techshare is that a group of three people came to visit our stall and they are hearing impaired accompanied by an interpreter. But even she is hard of hearing and I was confused for a while as I am a person with low vision and I wasn’t sure how I could interact with them. But the interpreter showed me the way actually how I can interact with all four of them and I managed to show them our products including accessible games and explained about our services.

In the display, there were lots of products that make lives of PWDs much more independent such as Color Identifier which not only identifies the color of clothes and objects but even skin, hair etc.

Also, the magnification devices displayed at few stalls were amazing and be a great help to people with low vision to read visiting cards, books, news paper etc.

I must mention that virtual barber shop at experience zone is fantastic. It’s good to see people waiting to see this experience. This has been showcased to show the visitors the effectiveness of the audio when visual functionality does not exist.

Overall, I believe Techshare India was an unique opportunity to see the various gadgets available for people with disabilities and to learn how to create an inclusive society.

TechShare India 2008 – Truly Accessible

Filed under: Techshare India — @ 5:31 pm

Hello Ha!!!, I am Francis Mascarenhas (trainee flash developer) a.k.a. Sybertrone, this is the first time I am ever blogging, well I think that’s more than enough about me or else I will start to bore you’ll.

The reason I am blogging is to share my experience of this really amazing conference called “techShare India 2008″ which was the first accessibility conference and exhibition that was held in India Habitat Centre (IHC), New Delhi. This was one Conference that was Truly Accessible; The most exciting part of it for me at least was to be a part of such a huge event. and I was hmmm… in charge of one of the tracks(to specify it was Track 3) well Rachana Parikh, Namrata Sawant and Prachi Chaturvedi were in charge of Track 1, 2 and 4 respectively(and I am sure they have got something to blog about their encounters at the conference). I have got no idea about their experiences but I am sure I had more fun. The name of the Track that I was in charge of was “Bridging the Digital Divide” well I am sure the title itself is self-explanatory right, if not here is a brief description of what all the tracks were about, check out the link “http://www.barrierbreak.com/techshareindia.php”.

For the first time when I saw the setup of techshare at the IHC, Vivek(Team Leader) told me that … you know what let me quote him on what he said, the exact words were “This is something Huge” and I completely agreed with him. And from that Day onwards everything was just hmmm… happening, I have got no words to describe it right now, but at that moment, be rest assured that the words that I had used would not be recommended on this blog. Everyone was astonishingly helpful, starting right from the volunteers to the event management team, especially the volunteers that had been assigned to my Track they were amazing to the extent that I just had to sit and they would do the rest. Hats off to the volunteers and the event management team.

Well coming back to Track that I was responsible of, there were some great eye openers. The few ones that cross my mind were from Kenny Johar (Vision Australia), Charles McCathyNeville (Opera Software), Sally Cain (RNIB) and of course who can forget Brian Hardy (Vision Australia). Other than Brian Hardy for his wonderful paper on Text Equivalent, he was also the one who promised me that he would end his paper in 30 mins because we were running short of time and he fulfilled his promise just in time for lunch (hehehe). I would love to share all of my cool experiences that I encountered, but since I am running short of time let me mention one more experience, I was interacting with a hearing impaired girl and had no clue about it, I was trying to tell her to escort one of the delegates to the exhibition area, and she was just giving me a blank look, I was like for crying out of loud please someone help me, then suddenly I realized that the girl was hearing impaired(was so engrossed in the sessions), so I tried my best to use sign languages and must admit she was amazing in understanding of what I was trying to put across, though I was not clear enough in what I had to say, that was an embarrassing moment, so now I realize that body language is as important as speech.

Time for me to say goodbye for now , Till then.

Chao.

TechShare Rocked!

Filed under: Techshare India — Shilpi Kapoor @ 4:16 pm

Oooh!

Last week was a mixture of enthusiasm, tension, excitement, learning, mixed feelings and much more. It was techShare India 2008.

It was a wonderful experience. All the abilities were under a single roof. There were many corporate, NGO’s, students, people with various abilities across India and abroad sharing their knowledge. The conference had 5 parallel tracks for 2 days. In all there were 60 presentations and 6 workshops enlightening our knowledge.

I presented a workshop on Flash and Accessibility on the first day. I was a bit nervous, as it was my 1st ever presentation at such a huge event. At the end everything went fine. It was a very interactive session; participants asked questions and got their concepts cleared. Workshop included all the concepts, ideas which are necessary to make flash accessible.

I couldn’t attend much of the sessions as I was busy handling our stall and logistics. On the second day luckily I got into a presentation on Flex Accessibility by Sameer Bhatt from Adobe. It was an informative session. In between the session he mentioned Hangman game as a good accessible game in flash and the way accessibility is being implemented in it. Though he mentioned my name as the creator of the game, he didn’t know that I was present there. So, I introduced myself. It was a proud moment for me telling adobe that we are using their product to the best anyone can. It’s good to know that people are actually considering our work (in my case flash and accessibility) as the ideal one.

We also launched our Accessible e-Learning Framework in flash (beta) at techShare. We are trying to take flash and accessibility to another level with our framework. People are eager to see the final product, which we will launch soon.

At the stall we were showcasing our accessible flash games. People were excited to play them. Many parents wanted to buy these games, but we had no plans to sell them at that point. We will make sure that these and many more such accessible games are available on CD’s or any other medium for students to enjoy learning without any barriers. After all, we are BARRIER BREAK.

TechShare rocked!!!

peace, veiky
