Accessibility Survey Report for Websites of Indian Companies listed on NYSE and NASDAQ
BarrierBreak Technologies has conducted an accessibility survey to evaluate the websites of Indian companies listed on NYSE and NASDAQ. The survey was conducted during the month of December 2007. This survey aims to ascertain the extent of web accessibility awareness and compliance in India.
A combination of automated and manual tests was performed to check the state of web accessibility of different company websites. Accessibility of the websites was tested keeping Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 1.0 in mind.
Websites were also tested for HTML and CSS validations to validate the web page markup. Manual tests were performed by persons with different types of disabilities such as visual, mobility and learning disabilities.
Homepage and two internal pages of each website were tested for WCAG 1.0 compliance. In addition, Sitemap of each website was tested to check for its effectiveness.
Following are the 15 companies whose websites were tested for WCAG 1.0 compliance:
HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys Technologies, Patni Computer Systems, Wipro Technologies, Satyam Computer Services, MTNL, VSNL, Sify, WNS, Genpact, Dr Reddy's, Sterlite Industries, Tata Motors and Rediff.
Key Findings
Test findings reveal a very sad state of web accessibility of Indian company websites listed on NYSE and NASDAQ. Some of the test findings include:
- Test results revealed that none of the websites were able to meet even the basic accessibility standards. As per the automated test, only two websites, Satyam and WNS came close to achieve "Single A" conformance (WCAG 1.0 - P1).
- Nearly 13% of the web pages lacked Doctype declarations. One of MTNL's web page and two of Rediff.com web pages could not be checked for HTML validation.
- Users faced different types of problems while accessing these websites including:
- Missing text alternatives for images
- Auto-refreshing form elements
- Flickering content on web pages
- Inappropriate page titles
- Missing label for form elements
- Inappropriate heading structure etc.
